We have recently received a nice selection of prehistoric stone artifacts from Spain. This is a comprehensive selection of tool types spanning the time frame of 400,000 to approximately 15,000 years old

AEE.1 PALEOLITICO INFERIOR (MID-ACHEULIAN) HAND AXE     SOLDA fine 13.3 cm long example from Velillade San Antonio (Madrid). Classic teardrop shaped of a fine textured gray quartzite. Remnants of the original cortex create a comfortable grip. The surface has taken a smooth lustrous polish on the exposed face. Superb specimen. Dating 200,000 to 400,000 years old.            

AEE.2 MID-ACHEULIAN CLEAVER TYPE HAND AXE. $180. 15.3 cm long, from Porzuna (Ciudad Real). Nice quartzite example has a smooth overall surface polish and has developed a beautiful rich brown patina. In excess of 200,000 years old.[ Click here to order ]

AEE.3 PALEOLITHICO INFERIOR CHOPPER TYPE HAND AXE $225. From Porzuna (Ciudad Real), 18.7 cm long. Very large quartzite specimen with a large portion of the original cortex on one side. AEE.4 MID-ACHEULIAN CHOPPER OR CUTTING TOOL $170. An 12.5 cm long specimen from Perales del Rio (Madrid). A very well made tool with the original cortex forming a comfortable grip but with a well defined and still sharp cutting edge even after nearly 400,000 years. AEE.5 PALEOLITHICO INFERIOR PICK TYPE HAND AXE SOLD Velillade San Antonio (Madrid), 13 cm in length. Banded quartzite with the original cortex forming the grip and a well developed long beak. Wonderful smooth surface gloss and a rich age color.  [ Click here to order ]

AEE.5 PALEOLITHICO MEDIO BLADE   SOLD   This beautiful translucent flint blade has a superb age gloss. The age is 100,000 to 40,000 years old and is 8.5 cm long. Found at Perales del Rio (Madrid).   [ Click here to order ]

AEE.7 MOUSTERIAN POINT . SOLD Perales del Rio (Madrid), 9.5 cm long semi-translu cent flint. This typically unifacial example is one of the most common tool forms associated with the Mousterian culture having an age of 30,000 to 180,000 years old. A small portion of the original cortex forming the grip, overall a fine glossy age patina with one surface leaching white.       [ Click here to order ]

AEE.10 LEVALLOSIAN BACKED KNIFE SOLD. Porzuna (Ciudad Real), 8.5 cm quartzite. A classic example of the Levallosian Flake Tradition with an age of 250,000 to 75,000 years old. A well prepared flake knife with secondary edge re touching. Nice age gloss and color.[ Click here to order ]

AEE.11 LEVALLOSIAN BACKED KNIFE SOLD From Porzuna (Ciudad Real), 10.5 cm speck led quartzite. Excellent triangular cross section with sharp cutting edges. Superb example of this 250,000 year old technique. [ Click here to order ]

AEE.12 LEVALLOSIAN FLAKE BLADE $40. Porzuna (Ciudad Real), 7 cm long quartzite. Everything about this tool is classic for the culture and the estimated age is about 80,000 to 100,000 years old. One edge has two prepared concave surfaces which would suggest a specialized use such as a spoke shave. Nice surface wind gloss.    [ Click here to order ]

In the past few years a nice sequence of stone artifacts types have surfaced in the northern part of the sub-saharan countries of NIger, Mali and Burkina Fasso. There is a good variety of projectile point types with ages up to 30,000 years old. But most of it is from the Saharan Neolithic tradition dating from 2500 to 6000 years old. Following is a fine selection of these points.

These are the Oldest Point type from the Neolithic Period, dating to around 8,000 years old. Using a very unique lithic technology that produced unifacial lamillar blades that only required basal modification to produce a very effective arrow point.
